Tuning the microstructure of polyurethane foam using nanocellulose for improved thermal insulation properties through an efficient dispersion methodology

Abstract Nanocellulose is explored as an eco‐friendly cell modifier and reinforcer for improving the thermal insulation mechanical performance of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). In this study, we report on a promising method achieving ‘solvent‐free' dispersion cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into polyether polyol production RPUF. This was achieved through wet grinding CNC powder in agitator bead mill CNCs superior to classical ultrasonication. While improvements (reduction) conductivity, due nucleation effect CNCs, RPUF from milling comparable that ultrasonication method, it should be noted despite reduction closed content (~80%) at similar average size. has been attributed either quality and/or involvement zirconium impurity within CNC‐RPUF.
